Comicpalooza Wrap-Up!

We had a great time last weekend at Comicpalooza!  Always glad to go out to that show; it's huge fun and a great excuse to hang out with all our art-buddies in Houston.  The coloring panel went pretty okay, too!  Unfortunately the last day of the show was when all the weather craziness rolled through Central Texas.  We were able to avoid/find shelter from all the flooding, though many weren't so lucky.  Please support relief efforts if you can.

Meantime, here are a good chunk of the sketches I did over the weekend!  Hope you'll dig 'em!

Comicpalooza Coloring Demo!

For those who came out to Comicpalooza today (or were just interested), here's the working copy of the final file, prior to merging down to the files export!  Also within this folder is a Doc-file of meditations on the process.  The basic moral is that you can do basically anything and build as high as you need, so long as you have a fairly ordered structure and a few smart work habits.

Download away!

Other recommended reading:

Color and Light, by James Gurney.  One of the modern masters of color theory whose insights are valuable even in our hypersaturated world of four-color comics.

Muddy Colors, a daily-updated blog curated by some of the brightest names in art and illustration.  Every post is a gem, but some are super useful for process.  Keep an eye out!

Adobe's Photoshop Default Keyboard Shortcuts.  Well worth knowing!

Also, I promised a pack of the brushes I used:  That, too, is on its way!  Sorry; check back in a couple days.  Need to get some time aside to reverse-engineer and compile them :X

Prepping for Alamo City!

Next weekend, if you’re going to Alamo City Comic Con be sure to check out my table along with all my art-buddies in CCP Comics! I’ll have bunches of art-prints, sketchbooks, and comics on hand, plus equipment for sketches and commissions. If you’re quick enough, you may even be able to score one of these two exclusive prints! They’re adorable, they’re very limited and the only set of these pieces that’ll ever be made, and the only place you’ll ever see them will be on that grand showfloor unless you take one home with you! Priced at only $10 each, or $15 together :)
Hope to see you there!

Staple: Independent Media Expo!

One of my absolute favorite shows of the year is coming up a couple of weekends from now -- STAPLE! Austin!

It's an art show glorifying the self-published, the creator-owned, the dark horses, the weird and the wonderful from all genres.   Over two days you get to shake hands with comic artists, game developers, filmmakers, animators, and podcasters in rockin' Austin -- And I'm pleased to report that I was able to squeeze into a table setup with my buddies at CCP Comics, booths 73 & 74, so come out and say hi if you can!

Other folks for watch for?  In addition to the awesome guest-artists Francesco Francovilla & Chip Zdarsky and the game-designers from the lauded (and local!) Stoic Studio, you should also keep an eye out for the amazing designer/illustrator J Hause (who's hosting a digital painting demo, I hear!), cartoonist and caricaturist Jeremy the Artist, the playful character-work of Jessi Jordan, Jamie Kinosian's lovely watercoloring, and Kevin T. Chin's all-around amazingness.

Also look to Toni Shelton, to Emily Rose Romano, to Mark Nasso with Doom Ranch 5000, and Isaiah Broussard of Brass Comics fame with Transyltown!

Sorry -- That's a lot'a links, but there are a lot of great people to meet.  Hope to see you there!

John Carter of Mars WIP 6 + Wizard World Austin!

Sorry it's been awhile since the last update.  I had to put this aside for a bit due to hectic times at work, conventions and other events; a commission (which I'll be able to share soon); and being just plain disillusioned.  I'll show why.. This is how it was looking up til this evening:

...And somethin' about it just kept bothering me.  After I ran it by one of my coworkers I realized JC's pose was too passive & static, his sword wasn't helping his silhouette, he was too centered, his anatomy just wasn't going to resolve, and his pose was too similar to the Thark's.  To help illustrate:

Only one thing to be done for it -- Total teardown!  The original drawing was drawn/painted over with an all-new pose...

By the time I had to go home I'd found a way to have nearly the same pose, but facing the viewer.

There's still a lot about the pose that I need to resolve before I really get into detail, and of course now I'll need to paint in everything behind him -- But ultimately it should end up as a better starting point than the first.  Sometimes when you've hit a wall, the wisest solution to a problem is to scrap it and start over -- And the next time, addressing the new ideas you've had since.

Now, to put the piece to bed again until after Wizard World :\  Remember -- I'll be drawing there all weekend, whether at the Powerhouse Animation booth or my own or at the Digital Painting instruction-panel on Sunday!  Hope to see you there!

Wizard World Austin, here we come!

SPECIAL EVENT!
Sunday, 12:30 – 1:15PM COMICS AND DIGITAL PAINTING WITH CHRIS BEAVER
Join Powerhouse Animation staff-artist Chris Beaver for an introduction on how to create a digital painting in Photoshop. In this session we’ll touch on the tools of the trade, learn valuable Photoshop tips & tricks, discover useful techniques, discuss time-honored painting theories and how to apply them to new media, and watch a piece of artwork unfold from its earliest sketches to its final execution! (MEETING ROOM 12)

Should be fun :D  It'd be a cool show if that alone were what I was up to, but I'll also have a half-table of my own and be helping out at the Powerhouse Animation booth!  Gonna be crazy.  Please, swing by and say hi when you're in Artist's Alley!
